A contractor has been fined after a worker fell through an unprotected skylight and broke his back.

On 22 October 2015 a subcontractor working for King Builders Gloucester Ltd fell through an unprotected skylight and suffered fractures to his vertebrae, chest and head.

A HSE investigation discovered there were numerous places on the site at Pitt Street, Gloucester which were a fall risk, and that King Builders failed to ensure the safety of those working on the roof.

The contractors were convicted at Cheltenham Magistrates Court of breaching work at height regulations and were fined £30,000, as well as being ordered to pay costs of £18,281.70.

HSE inspector Simon Chilcott said: “Those in control of work have a responsibility to ensure safe methods of working are used and to maintain control of those working for them.

“If simple precautions had been in place prior to the incident, the serious injuries sustained by the sub-contractor could have been prevented.”

As a solution to the problem of fragile skylights and roofs, Easi-Dec offers the Roof Walk system, a lightweight aluminium walkway allowing access from eaves to ridge whilst spreading the load on support battens, providing the user with a safer working position.

Providing full visibility and great for all weather use, the Roof Walk system makes accessing a roof with rooflights simple and safe.
